General

What is this comic?

Sax Munro - Tales from Harbor City is a film noir detective thriller in the best tradition. Or at least it will be: the story is written by you the readers, as and when you send in your ideas... Click on one of the what happens next? or write buttons around the site!

Who is Sax Munro?

Sax is lazy, alcoholic private eye of the lowest order. Together with his secretary Dolores, he works (well, works at avoiding work) in Harbor City. Go here to read about Sax and all the other characters in detail.

Where is Harbor City?

Harbor City is a typical fictitious metropolis, one of four cities on an (as yet unnamed) island - suggestions for a name are welcome!

Comic stuff

How do I move round the comic and site?

From the front page you can get to most of the site in a couple of clicks. If you get lost, the Sax hats Little hat will lead you around.

When you go to the comic, you'll see the index page listing current and past instalments. From here you can jump to the start of the chapter, your dog-eared page (what?), or the thumbnail index.

At the top of each page there's a button bar where you can move forward, backwards and up to the index page, and other buttons to dogear the page and change your viewing preferences.

Why does the comic load slowly?

In true graphic novel style, the comic is drawn large and in lavish detail to please your eyes (and potential publishers!), and also has some extra interactive features (animation etc). We've optimised the comic for viewing on different connection speeds, and you can choose how much detail to view to suit your modem speed (and patience!). The next point describes how.

What are the comic formats/comic format buttons?

We want to cater for all users without compromising on visual quality, so there are two formats available for the comic and graphics around the site: the aminated Flash version, and static images (jpeg) of the original artwork.

You can change the way the comic and site graphics are presented to suit you, by clicking on the appropriate comic format button at the top of the comic pages.

Please note that the Flash version requires the relevant plug-in for your browser from Adobe: most recent browsers will have these installed already, but you will be prompted to get the plug-in if you don't have them. It only takes a few minutes and is well worth it!

What's the interactive element?

The comic panels in the Flash version of the graphic novel feature pop-up speech bubbles, animations, sound effects, and events or sequences of events.

Most speech bubbles appear when you move over a character. You can control these and other events by moving your mouse around or clicking on the pictures. Explore round - some panels require several clicks to follow a conversation. Your mouse pointer changes around these interactive areas to find them!

What does the "dogear" do?

Just like a real book, you can mark a page by dog-earing it, to find it again easily when you return (we never had real bookmarks as kids...).

Click on the dogear this page button when you want to mark the current page, and on the go to dogear button to find it again at any time! (This feature uses cookies, which should be enabled on your browser. No information about you is stored apart from this page number).

Feedback stuff

Why isn't the story finished?

Sax Munro - Tales from Harbor City is the only interactive novel where you say where the story goes. This is a unique chance for you to take part in the creation of a new graphic novel, which, when it is published in hardcopy, will have all contributors listed on the credits page and acknowledged as co-writers!

We have started the ball rolling, but the rest of the storyline is up to you. To help you, there's plenty of info lying around the site by way of character profiles, history, maps and the like. More of this stuff gets added as the story expands.

I've got a great idea! Will you use it?

Go to the feedback page like the wind and send in your ideas! We welcome suggestions for new characters, places, background images, plot ideas, changes to the site, anything!

All ideas are considered on their own merits, and how they fit in with what's gone before in the story, if applicable. We don't throw ANY good ideas away, so even if it isn't used immediately it'll be on file. Your idea will be acknowledged on the credits page, and your name will go in the hard copy.

Can I submit artwork to you?

Please do send in any artwork you've done that's inspired by or related to Sax Munro. We work on PC's, so you can send any images via email as zips. To start with, keep submissions small and as static images (jpegs or gifs). Large files like executables and movies will be deleted without downloading if you don't let us know first!

As noted in the legal page, submissions made to dogsounds for use in Sax Munro and subsequent graphic novels are made on the understanding that the submissions may be used and modified freely, and will become the property of dogsounds upon incorporation into the work, but all contributors will be listed in the credits.
