Sax is a private eye of the lowest order. He is lazy, and an alcoholic - his favorite and almost only drink being Red Dog bourbon. He has an apartment somewhere, but more often than not lives out of his office (or wherever he falls over drunk). The only other loves in Sax's life are jazz music and his battered old saxophone. As a result, when not in the office, he's almost always in Le Bar Anubis, where his only true friend Reynard plays piano. When the bar's open, Sax indulges in their seemingly endless supply of Red Dog; when it's closed, he and Reynard will jam.
Sax tries when he can to avoid taking big cases, especially murder, preferring to float by on small piecemeal jobs that just about pay the rent. His brother (and partner) Murray was brutally murdered 4 years ago whilst they were on a case. The intended target was Sax himself, and Sax has never gotten over this. As a result, he drinks to escape, to forget. Sax is also a man "out of time" - mentally, he lives in the 1940's, and has little understanding of modern-day life or technology. This is partly because of his need to retreat from reality after his brother's death, and partly because he is an avid fan of old detective movies. This persona has gradually taken him over. He often says things like "hey, toots", or "say, dollface" etc.
Sax also has a deep-throat style contact, known only as "K". This contact is a D.A. who was framed for a murder and is now on the run from the police. K now has an "Equaliser" role, helping innocent citizens fight against crime and injustice. Only Sax knows K's true identity, and communication is via Harbor Postal Service mailboxes. Very rarely, they will talk over the phone, and rarer still will they meet. K is an invaluable contact who knows just about everything going on in Harbor City.
When Sax puts his mind to it, he can appear to work miracles and crack some seemingly impossible cases. Because of this, Harbor PD tend to tolerate his rather unorthodox work ethic (or lack of). Even tolerance has its limits, however.
