Sax has awoken feeling somewhat delicate, and his first appointment of the day is Ms. Litton, a quiet but determined woman. She tells Sax that her father, the renowned scientist Pyotr Litton, died recently. The police say it was suicide but she is convinced otherwise.

Sax mysteriously refuses the case, unable to face Ms. Litton, and gives no reason. Ms. Litton pleads with him - he is her only hope, and was highly recommended to her in an anonymous letter.

He still refuses.

She leaves, and Sax, shaken by the events, decides to head to his spiritual home - to Le Bar Anubis.

Here, he turns to his friends, Red Dog Bourbon, and Reynard, the bar pianist and his only true companion. He tells Reynard how he has refused the case, and Reynard tells him that he should try to finally get over his brother's death, pull himself from the gutter, and take cases like these once more.

"You a damn fine private eye," he tells him, "but you're drowning yourself in your own sorrows".

What happens next?

- Does Sax take the case with Reynard's words in mind?

- Is the appearance of Ms. Litton completely irrelevant?
